Watering Your Florida Lawn the Right Way

Reviewed by Carlon Price, owner: review pending

Water when the grass asks for it, not on a timer. Here are the signs to look for and how much to put down.

UF/IFAS Extension warns that overwatering harms a lawn over time: it raises the risk of disease, builds thatch, and leaves a shorter root system. Light, frequent watering keeps roots shallow too. Watering deeply, and only when the grass shows it needs it, works better.

Signs your grass needs water

UF/IFAS Extension suggests watering when part of the lawn shows these signs:

  • Leaf blades fold in half lengthwise.
  • The grass turns a blue-gray color.
  • Footprints or tire tracks stay visible long after they are made.

How much to put down

Apply about one-half to three-quarters of an inch of water at a time. Sandy Florida soil holds about an inch of water in the top foot, so that amount wets the root zone without soaking it. To check your sprinklers, set small, straight-sided cans in a line from a sprinkler to the edge of its spray. Run the system for 15 minutes, then compare how much water each can caught.

Water early in the morning

Early morning is the best time to water. Daytime watering loses more to evaporation, and watering in the late afternoon stretches the time the grass stays wet from dew, which UF/IFAS says can speed up lawn disease.

Follow local watering rules

Florida's water management districts set lawn watering rules, and many cities and counties add their own days and hours. Check the rules for your address before you set your irrigation clock.

We check sprinkler heads and clock settings for HOA and commercial properties. Ask about it when you call or text 850-624-6885.
